Chiang Mai take 2- 9-10/1/13

The journey to Chiang Mai was an interesting one. Whereas the one from there was very relaxed with our Maltesers we'd booked onto the tourist minibus and were soon careering around the winds and bends of the mountains in no time, fearing for our own lives at some points.  Whilst the journey to Pai took 4 and a half hours, the journey back in the crazy minibus took 3 hours!!!  Our very good timing was then ruined by the fact we'd been dropped at the bus stop and needed to be in town - this took 40mins for them to sort :S  Back in Chiang Mai we headed to a different place to before recommended by someone as cheaper but still with a pool.  It was full!  Laura went for a wander with George and Lara, and came back with option of a dorm for 2 each, 8 dorm for 7 of us sharing with a girl.  Our first dorm!  It was alright as things go but wouldn't have been keen sharing with strangers as there was no lockers nor did we have anything to lock the door with.  Luckily it wasn't busy other than us as there was only 1 shower to be shared with about 30 people!

That evening we went for a feast of Mexican for dinner ... Well me and Lara shared some quesquadias and a burger!  As before, massive portions of good food.  Whilst the Maltesers went back to the room for a bit we went in search of a Ladyboy Show (recommended by our additional room mate!)  It started at 9:30 and after searching for ages (and being distracted by shopping - I have bought the ultimate hippy trousers!) we finally found it at 10:15 to only see the last 15mins of it.  What we saw was amazing - the dancing was sooo impressive, and very fitting for me and Laura; they did Gangnam style!  The Maltesers made it before us then we all went to Zoe's area for some drinking and dancing.  Laura and I had a relatively tame night, in bed by 2ish but after I found a caterpillar in my bed, I kept itching and barely slept, also being woken by the others coming in!

The next day we said bye to the Maltesers and started with our chores.  After about 3 hours of sleep each we all went to the Chinese Consulate (the reason we were back in Chiang Mai) in hope of finally getting our visa!  After being told to type up our itinerary and finding an internet cafe and doing so (luckily I'd done one a few days before) we dropped everything off and went for lunch.

After our on mass of 7/11 toasties and unhealthy food we were all in the mood for a salad... Well almost: Laura and I shared a salad and an amazing panini!  Lara then went off to the Tiger Kingdom that we'd done and Laura and I got on with some chores.  First our malarial tablets for Africa; all 150.  And the benefits of Thailand - these prescription drugs you can get over the counter for under 10!!!  Bargain.

Some chores done, Lara returned and to continue the culture of our last day in Thailand, we went to the cinema to watch Life of Pi = AMAZING!  Loved it.  And to continue with the Indian theme, we then went for Indian for dinner!

I can't really believe that's it for Thailand: its been an adventure.  Beaches, parties, amazing people, learning to dive, full moon party, stunning scenery, elephants and of course, shopping and toasties!  Thailand seems more expensive than when I was here before: they are so geared up to tourists and sometimes exploiting them, especially in the south, that its almost lost it authenticity!  I much prefer north Thailand (Chiang Mai and Pai) as it stills feels like being in Thailand rather than any other city or beach in the world.  I have been in Thailand for over a month and have loved it but am ready to move on.  Until next time Thailand...

I really want to go to Chiang Mai and Thailand again now - your descriptions of both the scenery (and food) has made me want to travel big time (but maybe I will do without the caterpillars). xxx
