Fri 22nd June.

Got up at 8am, had breakfast and then headed off back up the I-84 until we reached I-82 at Hermiston and crossed the river into Washington state. Once over the river, we got on the more scenic Hwy 14 and were able to slow down and take in all the sights. We were now driving alongside an impressive stretch of the Columbia River. That is, the second largest river in North America, starting in northern Idaho traveling through the Columbia River Gorge and into southeastern British Columbia, over 1,200 miles to the ocean. http://www.crgva.org/ Along the way we were treated to a taste of good old England and stopped at Stonehenge. Obviously it is a much more modern version of what they think the original looked like and has sadly become a war memorial. We stopped for lunch by a little inlet that had some beautiful bright blue flowers and a lovely looking bridge. After that we stopped to look at the impressive Beacon Rock and a bit further on Cape Horn, with a beautiful view of the river from above. We then stopped at a place called Washougal for a smores pie (as it was cold and wet and not a good day for ice cream) in McDonalds and used their wi-fi to locate a campsite for the night. We then carried on to Vancouver, WA (not BC, not yet anyway) and crossed the bridge, not as far as Portland but to the Island in the middle called Hayden Island and checked into the campsite there. Once checked in, we drove over to Safeways to get a few more supplies and then headed back to cook dinner. After a nice warm chilli, we relaxed, showered and watched the first episode of the final series of Hustle. Then it was time for bed and as we curled up under the duvet we hoped the rain would stop soon.
