La Quinta Avenue Hotel
Mon 12th Mar cont.
After a few stops here and there for a girl who wasn´t feeling too well and breakfast, we arrived at Agua Azul around 11am. We only had an hour here which was plenty of time to view the lovely blue waters and get to the top of the waterfall. We even had time to dip our feet which was very pleasant in the increasing heat of the day. The bus was due to leave at 12.30pm, but the girl and her friend that was feeling sick on the way were nowhere to be seen. We hunted around for half and hour or so but in the end the driver put the rest of us and the schedule before them and had to leave them behind. Hope they´ll be ok. An hour later we arrived at the next stop, Cascadas de Misol Ha which is a lovely water fall that you can walk behind. As it was now spring, it wasn´t a full on roar but a few very nice small falls. We walked behind the falls to a cave at one end and then went back via the viewing platforms. We only had half an hour there because of the earlier mishap but very nice all the same. We got back on the bus with a nice refreshing lemon water from the chiller and headed off to our final destination the Palenque ruins (our first Mayan ruins). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palenque Apparently, it was built for strategic purposes and the main palace has a tower which could have been a watch tower. We spent nearly two hours at the ruins which were surrounded by jungle so had quite a different feel to the others we had seen so far. Some of the grand staircases had house like buildings sat on top,and appeared much bigger than the temples of the other sites. At 5pm we loaded back up in the bus and just up the road dropped Katie and Josh off at the jungle lodges just outside the ruins. We exchanged details and then headed off to the centre as we wanted to stay near the bus station as we have an 8am bus in the morning. Once we were dropped off at the bus station, we found the La Quinta Avenue hotel that was in our guide book across the road and checked out the rooms there. It seemed good enough so we checked in and then wandered down to the main square to find something for dinner. After a nice fahita and milkshake for dessert, we went back to our room via the supermarket for some breakfast things to relax and have a nice quite night in front of the cable TV.
