Where I stayed
Sat 10th Mar.
After a long winding road and not the best nights sleep, we arrived into San Cristobal around 7am. At the bus station, we sat chatting to a couple (Katie and Josh), one of which would you believe came from Guildford! It is a small world! While the four of us chatted and tried to decide where we were going to stay the night, a hostel owner came over to tell us all about her hostel that we could check into straight away. As it was one we'd read about, we shared a taxi and checked in to the cheapest rooms we've stayed in Mexico so far at MXN$180 which is about £9. Yeah it's not the Ritz, but we've stayed in a lot worse. Once checked in, we had a snooze for an hour or so and then enjoyed a nice hot shower to wake us up. We then wandered in to the centre to have a look round. While we were there, we had tacos and quesadillas for lunch and a Burger King milkshake for dessert. Then we headed back for another rest. Around 3.30pm we headed to the supermarket to get some supplies for dinner. After dinner, we watched a couple of episodes of Merlin and then got some more sleep.
Sun 11th Mar.
After a good nights rest, we woke to brilliant sunlight pouring into our room, which was odd as our room didn't appear to have an outside window! Nevertheless, bright it was and a little noisy to, as all the rooms had steel doors which weren't quiet to open and close. We eventually got up and headed over to the main house for breakfast, after which we decided to head down to the bus station and book our bus from Palenque to Campeche in a couple of days. We returned to the hostel and paid for our second night and also a tour to Palenque for the next day, which included visits to some waterfalls and the ruins. This meant that we didn't need to stay too long in Palenque, which was why we had already booked our bus out of there. We then returned to our room to do some research. Around lunch time we headed into the centre and found a nice little restaurant to have lunch, which consisted of the local corn soup and chicken in a salsa with rice and tacos (small tortillas to you and me). Fed and watered we walked to Inglesia de Guadelupe, a beautiful looking church just a few blocks from our hostel. A little while later, we returned to the hostel and met up with the couple we'd booked in with and spent a pleasant few hours chatting and swapping travel stories in the courtyard. Around 5.30pm the temperature had dropped and we headed inside to prepare an early dinner, shower and then pack, ready for our 6am tour tomorrow morning. After watching the last episodes of Merlin series 3, we got off to bed.
Mon 12th Mar.
Alarm goes off at 5.20am and after a lie in for 10mins we got up, dressed and walked across the road to the main hostel to be picked up by the tour bus. It arrived at around 6.30am and we all (Katie and Josh as well) settled in for a few hours nap on the minibus which to be fair was quite comfortable.
