22nd Nov. cont.

A couple of hours later we arrived in Lone Pine and thanks to the friendly folk at their Visitor Centre, found a little car park owned by a local motel to park up in, opposite McDonalds, so free wi-fi to! This part of the trip seems to being going up and down in altitude. We were at around 7,000ft in Grand Canyon, 2,000ft in Las Vegas and now we're back up to around 4,000ft. Maybe the thermals will be getting another airing! After dinner we snuggled up under the blanket to watch a downloaded Desperate Housewives, but as is becoming the norm, it didn't work, so we just went to bed instead. Hopefully, this will be the last cooler night for a while!

23rd Nov.

Got up around 6am to race off to catch sunrise in the Alabama Hills. We made it just in time to catch them glowing a beautiful pinkish colour, known as the Alabama Glow. We did a short walk to an arch which framed Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the area and then returned to Brian for breakfast. After a bowl of warm porridge, we set off on a scenic drive which was supposed to have several rock formations in recognisable shapes. However, we only managed to recognise about 2. So we gave up and just enjoyed the drive. The Alabama Hills are famous for the backdrop to many movies including Ghunga Din, Maverick and so many westerns. Unfortunately, unless you know the films inside out, I doubt if you would recognise what rock/hill was used in the films.
