High Desert RV Park
10th Nov.
We woke up around 7am feeling rather cold as it was freezing last night, so we got up and headed off out of town stopping at the nearest rest area to have some breakfast. After breakfast, we got back on the road and a few hours later we reached Albuquerque and looked for a visitor information centre. We saw a sign for visitor info but had trouble finding the right exit off the interstate and had to double back. Stopping in a fuel station to top up on some more petrol at a pretty cheap $2.99pg, we got some directions of how to get back on the interstate, (it's so confusing round here) and found the right exit. Problem was that there were no signs to tell us where to go next, but as luck would have it we passed a barbers that had haircuts for $8. So we stopped in and had, (the most we've paid on our trip), a pretty amateur hair cut, (Cat's guy's hand shook!). Oh well, at least it will grow and we can get it sorted when we get back. We then headed to the Petroglyphs National Park to have a look at some rock art where we also saw a Road Runner happily scurrying around. Once we'd walked the loop, we drove up to the National Parks Visitor Centre to get some more info and have lunch. From there we drove up to another site to see some more Petroglyphs and saw some more wildlife, a lovely cute bunny. We then drove back into town to a McDonald's to use their wi-fi to look for a campsite. Campsite located, we headed off out to a nicely priced campsite that we discovered has a massive TV in a shared lounge. So we parked up and settled in, in front of the TV for a big dose of Bones. We then had dinner while watching TV! Around 8pm we were kicked out of the TV room and returned to our cold van, got the bed out and snuggled under the covers watching the first episode of Life. Cat managed to make it to the end (just) but we gave up on watching anything else and got off to bed.
11th Nov.
Had a bit of a lie-in but had to get up around 8am as it was too cold to stay in bed. We put two loads of washing on and had our breakfast in the main building, (with the TV in), as it was warmer. After breakfast we skyped Cat's parents and caught up on a few on-line bits. When the washing was done, we got the van ready and headed off out of the city going north around midday. Once on the highway Cat noticed a vibration on her side of the van, so after a bit of umm-ing and urh-ring we decided to change that wheel to see if that helped. Whilst changing the wheel I noticed that the wheel bearings had a little play in them, so we decided to head back in and have them checked before getting out into the middle of nowhere. The mechanic gave Brian a quick road test and then had him up in the air with all four wheels off. Half an hour later they came back with the verdict that there was nothing wrong with him apart from maybe having the tyres changed soon as they were starting to wear out. So we drove back out of the city heading north through some snow covered mountains until we stopped for the night at Walmart in Farmington. Once settled in, we made dinner and watched the second episode of Life, then put our thermals on and got some sleep.
12th Nov.
Not a bad night, still a bit cold but our thermals made all the difference. Up at 7.30am, had breakfast, stocked up at Safeway's, (got a deal on our bbq ribs - $19.99rrp discounted to $9.99 with card - actually was $4.99!). Headed out of town towards Aztec Ruins National Monument in Aztec.
