After a couple of hours, we finished the parkway and jumped on I-24 heading to Illinois. Here we tried out a couple of campgrounds in Shawnee National Forest, but they all charged so we ended up at Fort Massac rest area, where we cooked dinner and decided to spend the night. This was the first rest area which actually openly encouraged you to rest for at least 10hrs, (it said so on a sign). Tonight we watched the film, Due Date, before wrapping up again and going to sleep.
29th Oct.
Got up around 7.30am to our first frosty windscreen. Had breakfast, porridge to keep us warm and waited for the screen to clear in the sun. While waiting Cat noticed a cardboard cut out Superman with no head, outside the rest area building. Dean, of course, had to have his photo taken as Superman. We wondered why it was there and found out that there was a town called Metropolis, 3 miles down the road and this had of course, become the 'Home of Superman'. When ready, we headed off to see for ourselves Superman's home. Here there was a 15ft Superman statue and a smaller bronze of Noel Neill, Lois Lane in the TV series, The Adventures of Superman, (not The New Adventures which was Terri Hatcher). They also have a Super Museum but unfortunately, it didn't appear to be open so instead we walked around town looking at the murals which depict scenes of past eras. We left a little while later, hopping back on I-24 heading towards St Louis. We stopped for lunch just outside, at the Mississippi Bubble Historical Marker. Don't ask, I'm not quite sure what is was referring to. You can read the sign in the photo and make up your own minds. After lunch we drove straight through St Louis into Missouri, looking for a Welcome Centre to pick up a state map.
