20th Oct

Had a little lie in and got up around 8.30am. Once we'd finished emptying the waste and filling the water tank, we headed off around 11am. We had no idea where we were heading in Mississippi so decided to stop at the Welcome Centre in Greenville to see what there was to do. After a few minutes we had picked up a map of the state and few other leaflets. Firstly, we headed to Winterville Mounds just a few miles outside Greenville. It is a site of a prehistoric ceremonial centre built by a Native American civilisation. It was similar to the Effigy Mounds in Iowa except these ones were not in animal shapes, just ordinary mounds. This time however, we were allowed to climb to the top of one of them. When we got to the top though, we couldn't see any of the other mounds. We were too high. You could see them better from ground level. Afterwards, we headed away from Greenville to Leland, the birthplace of Kermit the Frog. Here they have a small exhibit showing Jim Henson's earlier years. The lady on duty gave a lovely tour and history of Jim when he lived in Leland. She was obviously very proud of him and her enthusiasm showed. We then sat and watched a DVD of his earlier works which were simply funny. We dropped a few dollars in the donations jar and as we had had lunch before we entered the exhibit, we headed off into Leland to check out the Blues murals. Then we got on Hwy 61 towards Vicksburg. We were heading to Laurel as tomorrow was the start of their South Mississippi Fair which we thought might be interesting. However, time was getting on so we only made it to Jackson before we decided to find a Walmart and park up & cook dinner. Luckily for us, the first one we tried said overnight parking was ok. We found a spot and set up camp. After dinner we watched an episode of Being Human and then wrapped ourselves up in our duvet and went to sleep.
