10th Oct.

Got up around 8am and left heading straight for the Everglades National Park for breakfast.
Arrived at Shark Valley Visitor Centre just after 9am and had breakfast in their car park. We then decided to have a walk around the area. Along the road we spotted a few alligators, herons and turtles in the water beside the road. On the actual road, we saw grasshoppers and a praying mantis, a rare sighting apparently. We were going to walk the trail that went into a hammock, (a stand of trees on a natural rise), but a couple of minutes along, we got covered in mosquitoes and ran back to the road, scratching! We then walked along the boardwalk, but here we saw no wildlife, so headed back to the van. We then continued west along US41 and decided to do a scenic loop road, which after a few minutes turned into a gravel road. Here we saw several alligators, butterflies, snakes, birds, deer and a squirrel. When we came to the end of the road we noticed that there was a barricade half way cross the road, with a 'road closed' sign on it. Oops! We then headed to the Big Cypress Visitor Centre where we found out that there should have been a sign at the other end where we started the loop road saying it was closed but obviously someone had moved it! We then headed further west along US41 to Wootens Everglade Airboat Tours, where we did a half hour tour through mangroves and marshlands. We saw a couple of alligators, but not much else, but it was fun. We then had lunch before we headed off towards Naples. We then continued north along the US41.
