12th Sept.

Got up at 7.30am, had breakfast and then grabbed a few things from Walmart before heading off to Louisbourg. We arrived into Louisbourg around 9.00am and headed to a campsite that was walking distance from the Louisbourg Historical Fort and checked in. This has to be the earliest we've ever checked into a campsite and we were grateful that they didn't mind us getting there so early. Once we'd plugged the van in and made some sandwiches, we headed to the Fort that was managed by Parks Canada. The Fort has been authentically restored and has Barkerville style characters that act out their lives in the year 1744. After a guided tour of the site we were left to our own devices to seek out the characters and ask about their lives and any gossip going on. At midday, they fired one of the cannons (which was pretty loud) and then just after 1pm we watched a public punishment, where a fisherman had stolen a bottle of wine and was marched into the square and manacled by the neck to a post for all to see. It was quite funny, as some of the women folk hammed up their parts beautifully, especially the misguided lover who was convinced the thief would return to her (and not his wife). We then had a look around the rest of the site, wandering in and out of peoples homes and chatting to the characters inside. By 3.30pm we'd had enough and headed back to the campsite for a rest. As we'd been a week without decent wi-fi (with privacy) we Skyped Cat's parents to have a chat and check all was well. We then made dinner around 6pm and had pancakes with Maple syrup for dessert. After dinner we showered and then settled in for the evening with a movie and then off to bed.
