25th July cont.

From Medora we drove up to the highway, out of North Dakota and into Montana where the scenery got more hilly and green. We drove for a few hours stopping at Miles City to get some provisions and fuel up and a rest stop around 6pm to cook some dinner and admire the view. Listening to the radio, we were aware of a thunder storm coming in and it got a bit on the gusty side, but we hoped the storm was going to be further south than where we're heading. After dinner we carried on along the highway until we found our turn off to a smaller road that led to another highway and a truck stop that we were going to be spending the night at. It was rather deserted but the local police station was nearby and this also made it nice and quiet. When we'd parked up around 9pm, we had a wash (in the car park, in our swimmers) with our solar shower and then settled in for the night.

26th July.

Got up at 7.30am, had breakfast and got on the road around 8.30am round the corner to Little Bighorn Battlefield (Custer's last stand). We again waved our magic annual pass and then listened to half the ranger battle talk, he went on for too long for us, so decided to have a look at the place. We walked up to the monument on Last Stand Hill where we saw a lot of white memorial stones for the fallen solders and a special one where Custer also fell. Across the road from there was a second memorial for the Indians that also fell. We then drove the 5 mile track with signs describing the different parts of the battle and more markers to show where solders and indians fell. There aren't too many indian markers as the families didn't want them, choosing to use stones instead.
