Where I stayed
Diamond M Ranch
23rd May cont.
After lunch we headed out to the main road and up to Kenai, hopefully where the visitor center was open. We were out of luck, it was still on winter hours and shut till tomorrow. We managed to find one B&B on the tourist map and went to ask if they had a bed for the night. The problem with B&B's here is that they can be anything from a room with a bed or a massive suite with as big a price tag. This one had the big price tag but the nice friendly lady owner phoned the ranch across the river and they said they'd find us something and try and do a deal. We crossed the river and drove into the ranch and asked what they have available in the office. They showed us a nice suite for US$130 a night (he acctually said that the view was that price and the room was free) and even though the view was fantasic we had to decline it and asked if he had anything cheaper. The bunks they had were full and he asked what our budget was, we replied US$60. After a quick call to his wife he said that we could have the room for that price as it needed a little tidy up and it was better to get something rather than nothing. So we settled into our luxury room and did some research on our next move whilst enjoying the view. After dinner on the balcony, we had a shower and did some laundry then settled in to watch the sunset around 11pm.
24th May.
After a lovely nights sleep, we got up around 9am and had breakfast in our kitchenette. We then phoned the cruise company and booked our cruise to Vancouver via the Inside Passage. At around 10 we packed up the car and drove to the visitor center which was finally open and looked around the exhibition. Most of the centers have pretty good exhibitions of the local wildlife and are pretty cool to look round. We then took a walk around the old Kenai village to look at how it was back then. Most of the buildings are still in use and have been kept in pretty good condition and have a very good view of the bay and mountains.
