1st Nov.

Up at 6am and we're nearly the last to leave the boat, so we said goodbye to Tom and the 6 of us got in an old VW transporter to take us to the HI hostel (Hostel Amazonias) in town. Beginning to sink in now how expensive Brazil is, the 6 of us shared a dorm for R$28 (11) each as we didn't want to pay the R$75 (28) for a double per couple, but it's hopefully only for
one night as we're flying to Rio on Wednesday morning. After a bit of breakfast across the street we sorted our laundry and then I went to the supermarket to buy some things to make scrambled egg for lunch. After lunch we went in search for wi-fi internet as the hostels was
broken! No discount for it though! Julia and Dan found some at Mcdonalds but had to pay R$9 (3.50) for 2 hours, so we went to the local cybercafe where R$1 (0.38p) got us 30mins hard wired internet. As we still didn't have an email confirmation for our flight to Rio, we went in search of the local TAM office which was nearby where they confirmed that we were on the flight so no worries! We headed back and after a nice cold shower Andre, Abreu, Cat and I
went to the mall to check out the shops and get something to eat, we had a Bob's burger and Andre had pizza. When we got back we chatted for a while over lemon tea and then got some sleep, it had been a long day.

2nd Nov.

I slept like a log, no swaying in a hammock, Cat on the other hand didn't as the air con didn't reach her and was a bit on the warm side. Got up at 8.30 and had a nice breakfast of fruit, yoghurt, scrambled egg, bread, juice and tea. One of the owners made some tapioca which was ok when you smother it in jam, (very salty otherwise) and after that we were quite full. After breakfast Cat and I packed our bags ready for the flight and then we all caught a bus down to the markets. They had everything you can think of there including, fish, fruit, crafts, nuts, animals and juices etc. After waiting ages for a bus back we gave up and decided
to walk which was nice as there are several nice parks one the way. The buildings, all though rather run down, have beautiful architecture and as it was a public holiday was rather deserted. We got back around 2 and rested from the heat before having something for lunch. Two cheese, tomato, pepper and onion rolls later and when the day got cooler we were ready to conquer Belem and headed for the Fort. Next to the Fort there was a jetty with a Naval gunship docked
and behind that the start of a beautiful sunset. There was also a beautiful church across a square with a statue of a Bishop in the middle. We headed back at dusk to see the place start to light up which was a nice way to finish the Belem end of our Amazon river experience. Back at the hostel we got a few hours kip before saying our goodbyes to our shipmates for now and then get a taxi to the airport, destination Rio de Janeiro!
