Happy birthday Daniel! I named a penguin after you! This is the photo opportunity i had out of my cabin window this morning, as we came into Antarctica!
Morning Danco island - amazing icebergs & weddle seal and of course lots of penguins. We kayaked and also did a zodiac landing.
Afternoon - necko bay Antarctica finally landed on the continent. Amazing kayaking - whales! Walk on Antarctica with the penguins. This kayaking was the highlight of the trip! We also had a zodiac landing and walked amongst the penguins up an icy hill.
What an absolutely amazing and action packed day! You get woken at 7am and then breakfast is at 7:30. By 8:30 there is an announcement - sea kayakers to the library. You go there and Ian explains the conditions and what our plans are and you can choose to kayak or not. It was a beautiful sunny day - very rare, so I was definitely in.
You then head down to the mud room and get changed into your immersion suit, kayaking skirt, booties and life jacket. You need to have gloves on and beanie and sunnies - so much to think about. Then you need to get in the kayak and launch then off you go for an hour and half. Then back to ship, get out of kayak, pack your kayak, get unchanged and then changed into what you want to wear to shore and it all depends on how wet you got kayaking as to how much of your layers you need to change over. Then boots and wet weather gear on, wash the boots and get into a zodiac. On shore, wander around for an hour or so then back onto zodiac and back onto boat. Wash boots, peel off a layer or 2 then head to lunch. After lunch repeat all the above starting with a sea kayaking meeting in the library! By the time you get back and have a quick shower it is then debrief time in the Discovery Lounge followed by happy hour and then dinner.
After dinner you then hang out or watch the movie but after a day like today you just want to go to sleep. Fantastic!
The only downer, because the weather was so great - about 10 degree at some points out of the wind - the snow has melted a bit and hardened in the sun so camping could not go ahead. Ben ( the camping master) said we would need crampons and even a shovel wouldn't break through the ice. Bummer but there is always tomorrow night!
