Those caprihina's have way too much sugar in them so I ended up staying awake until 3am - might come in handy on the sambadrome night given that starts at 9pm and will go all night until dawn. I had written my blog for the 18th during this time but unfortunately lost it all so have just rewritten it today.

This morning after breakfast we were going on the Favela tour. The Favela is the slums of Rio and I was really interested in finding out more about it. The Rochino Favela is the largest one in Rio - population 200,000. Our guide explained that the government is building a lot of facilities etc to improve life in the Favela rather than trying to make the people move. There is still a lot of violence and gang activity in the Favela but we didn't need to worry about that or about being mugged etc as they (the drug lords etc) actually protect the tourists as they want them to visit and buy various good for sale. We were taken art gallery for instance that local people contribute to but I'm sure they also want people to buy drugs and feel safe doing it - not that we saw any of this.

To start our tour we got to have a motorbike ride up to the top of the Favela - that was lots of fun and hopefully I will be able to upload a little video to show you. [PHOTO_ID_R=100_0053.mo. We then walked all the way back down through the windy alleyways. We were entertained along the way by a group of kids that make musical instruments out of whatever they can find.  Also cute little boys dancing up a storm! It was absolutely fantastic to be able to learn so much about this area from our local guide - who had many inserting stories to tell us too! We even saw the evidence of many gun battles that happen quite often. The front of the Favelo is always armed police & milatry - I have included a photo with me standing beside one police officer - with mk40!

Rest time this afternoon as there is a huge street party in tonight!

Hey Curly - what is it with you and falling off tour buses? I seem to recall Barcelona 1991 and you fell off that bus as well!!!! Although, that time we needed tweezes to pick out the gravel. Lucky I had my trusty manicure set. Am loving the blog and the photo's are awesome. Am so jealous, wish I was falling off buses with you. xxxxxxx

Kelza! You are so right about me falling out of buses! What is that! I only had to pick stones out of my hand this time - probably because I dress more sensibly nowadays and my knees were covered! Phew!

Miss you xx
