Where I stayed
I arrived safely in Rio after what was a very long trip. It is now just after 8pm local time which means it is now 9am on Friday morning and most of you had a good nights sleep and are now at work! I didn't get much sleep at all - a couple of power naps really as we travelled in daylight the whole way.
I was excited when we landed in Santiago as it hit home that was going to be the first place I set foot in Sth America. The landscape was ver dry & brown in Santiago but it looks like an interesting part of the world - which I will explore later in my journey. The land seems very flat then suddenly rises to these massive mountains.
My first glimpse of Rio, as the clouds parted, was breathtaking. What an amazing HUGE city! I was looking out the window going WOW - I have never seen anything quite like this before. As far as the eye could see the ground was covered in buildings.
Only disappointment so far was that the transfer I had organized never happened. I was expecting to see my name on a piece of paper as I walked out of customs but alas, it was not to be. I waited for a while - the airport was really calm compared to some I have landed in (think Delhi!) so I felt ok doing that. I had made "friends" with the lady sitting beside me on the plane even though she spoke no English and I spoke no Spanish (she is from Argentina) so we kind of hung out together as she was waiting for her "amigo" to pick her up. In the end I just paid for a cab and will take it up with the travel company.
Driving into Rio from the airport was an experience to say the least. Traveling in India has really prepared me for scary car trips! First glimpse of the Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf mountain were amazing however and Copacobana beach has a real vibe about it, even in the short time I have been here.
Well, time to crack a can of Brazilian beer at the roof top bar and then try to get some sleep.
