I I travelled to the south of Ghana to meet up with some volunteers who had arrived at the same time as me - 5 wonderful people from varied fascinating backgrounds, each volunteering for different VSO programmes – fund raising, securing livelihoods, disability support and one other , like me, in education

The Boti waterfalls are 30metre high are near Koforidua in the South East of Ghana. We visited at them at their most impressive time – just after the rainy season, when they are in full flow.

As Ghana is not really geared up for tourism or to exploit any opportunities to market their areas of natural beauty, we were not holding out much hope for the waterfalls before our arrival. However, when the forest cleared and we saw the pair of falls, our breath was certainly taken away. It was easy to see why this is considered a sacred site by Ghanians. Clambering to stand behind the falls was exhilarating challenge too. We spent a couple of hours simply admiring their beauty and enjoying the location and each other's company.

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, whilst waiting for a tro (minibus – most common form of Ghanian transport on which I will elaborate in a later blog) a pick-up truck stopped and offered us a lift. So we sat in the back - the sun on our faces, wind in our hair, whilst the two truck guys joked about their "obroni" (white people) for sale to everyone we flew past.

Our perfect day culminated with cold beer in a roof top bar – all the more perfect as the view of Koforidia included the local sewer – so Ghanian!
