We land in LA and head over to Hertz where we have hired a car for a week. We've bagged a bargain and gone for the Mustang convertable, well you would too if you had the chance! So its down with the roof, on with the radio and we take highway 1 up the coast. Only to get to hwy 1 means a quick jaunt down the freeway, wrong hand drive car and the fact they drive on the wrong side of the 6 lane freeway all makes for a rude awakening for Richy.
Our roadtrip begins with Santa Monica, Malibu, Zuma beach (home to the original Zuma Jays surf shop) and up to Santa Barbara, can't say it was all clear driving but the traffic was light and the fog does clear every now and then to reveal quite beautiful views.
At Santa Barbara we cut inland to the Santa Ynez wine region and stay for the night in Solvang, a town proud of its Danish origins. Its a bit cheesey touristy but we forget that after a few bottles of the local vino... This is the area that "Sideways" was filmed in, which is pretty much how our vision is by the time we stumble into bed.
