Arrived in Montezuma yesterday. Feel like the true backpacking has started, as we arrived with no place to stay. Decided the best strategy was to park M F with a drink and his book to look after the backpacks while I walked around and scouted out our accommodation. Worked out pretty well as Montezuma is a small town. Found a place (as recommended by the guide book'Luna Llena) up a steep hill and the only room they had was the honeymoon suite, but bear in mind it's a hostel. This turns out to be a pavilion with a 180 degree sea view in the jungle, however it is open to nature.... The wooden slate floors have gaps in them open to the jungle, as do the wooden slat windows that open out. Plus the bathroom is a short walk outside and its open air in part. The view was so good that I prepared my self for the critters. We decided unpacking would be unwise as we'd only end up with critters in our bags. Then I went for went for my shower at night time (cold water only, of course.....starting to get used to it as our last hotel was the same) and what did I spy but my nemesis the dreaded cockroach joining me for a shower. The place is very clean, but this is the jungle! I resisted the temptation to scream "Aleeeeeeeeeex" and pondered whether I could shower with it, then fortunately it finished washing its hair and left and I took the fastest shower possible.

Going to bed was interesting..... first nearly stood on a small frog that had found its way in, then once inside the mosquito net (made sure it was firmly tucked into the bed, so nothing could crawl in), we both took turns in shining the torch to see what was there ... me (paranoid of bugs) and Alex (paranoid a mosquito was inside our net).

Still when we woke in the morning and sat on our veranda the view was worth it and then some parrots flew by and some white faced monkeys came and sat on the branches outside and played.

Overall impression of Montezuma....supposed to be a hippy town, but in reality its bought in to the idea and is quite commercialized and has more American students then hippies! But its a pretty enough spot and has a beautlful waterfall, which is a tricky hike thru water, mud and slippy hills....but once there you can swim in the rock pool at the bottom.

Also did a day trip to Tortuega Island for some snorkelling (not that clear in the water tho), BBQ lunch and relax on the beach.

Decided to move on to Manuel Antonio tomorrow...change of plans....was initially thinking too touristy....but hotel at Mal Pais assured us that its low season, so it will be worth the visit.
