In November, a group of Fulbrighters (a large group of about 15) decided to plan a trip to the ski resort, Pamporovo in the Rhodopi Mountains. I figured I would snowboard..since the last time I went skiing my sister took to me to HUGE mountain and pushed me down and I rolled 10 times. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating..she might have nudged me. Either way, it was traumatic. When I left Dimitrovgrad it was sunny and warm. About 5 minutes into the Rhodopi Mountains and it was raining and snowing. The snow drifts were massive..about 2 feet tall! It was a beautiful winter wonderland. Ariel, Tatiana, Amanda, and I decided to take a 4 hour ski lesson. So much for my traumatic experience. The first two hours were a bit rough for all of us. Our instructor was so friendly and patient. We did basic drills for what seemed like forever. After a while I was ready to just go jump on the mountain and see how fast I could go.
Before we did that, Ariel and I went to a restaurant nearby for lunch. She ordered a tea with rum and told me her and her boyfriend of 9 years broke up.
I ordered a tea with rum.
We talked about boys, trying new things, skiing, and how dumb boys are. Haha. The next two hours of our lesson flew by. We learned how to turn both directions and we weaved in and out of the obstacles he set up for us. At the end of the lesson he said we were going to go down the mountain slowly. Slow doesn't work for me. I zoomed down the mountain and felt so free. I was hooked. The next day we got our lift tickets and spent all day skiing all over the slopes.
We stuck to the green lines mostly, but eventually felt ballsy and decided to try out the blue. That's when I lost them.
I went first and flew down the steep decline only to turn around and be alone. I lost Tatiana and Amanda. I waited for about 15 minutes then decided they must have gone by or taken a different route. I went down the rest of the way alone. I only fell once and I rolled and magically ended up back on my skis. It was awesome. I looked around..waiting for an applause or something but none came. :( haha When I was about halfway down the mountain I took off to the right following two others. After about 5 minutes of skiing we knew we were WAY away from any kind of trail. So we kept going and made our own path back to the main line. I went back to the main center of the resort and waited for about 30 minutes when I finally saw Tatiana and Amanda. Apparently Amanda fell at the beginning and couldn't get her skis on..then she fell and hit her head. Oops.
That evening we all made smores. Ariel's mom sent her a whole suitcase full of smore-making necessities. It was SO nice to have an American treat and a perfect ending to our ski weekend.
