Arriving in Thailand on the 20th March, I tried to get into Kao San Rd as quick and as cheaply as possible.. asking the lady at the desk which was a cheapest way to get there, she showed me to the 100B buses- pretty expensive i thought, but took it. later i found out that the local buses are about 40B.. met a guy on the bus (Josh) and spent the next three days sharing rooms and hanging out.
After about 5 days in Thailand, i headed to Kanchanaburi on the advice of a friend who said there are great waterfalls out that way. really nice ones it turns out but i don't have any photo's. took a ride on the death railway, where hundreds of allied POW's in WW2 were forced by their japanese captors to build a section of railway which would link burma to vietnam. lots of people died. strange to see japanese tourists posing with english people on the bridge though, wonder what they were thinking?
After kanchanaburi where i met some really cool people (beck, patrick and patrick, the english couple who had just broken up but were still traveling together, the south african and american who had the most interesting lives i'd heard about and the three other english girls). strangely enough even though patrick and patrick were doing the exact same trip as i am, i still haven't seen or heard of them again.. wonder if they got sucked into the pai black hole...
North to Chiang Mai after kanchanaburi where i met tina, and hung out with her and some people she met on a trek at the zoo and at a kick boxing match.. anyway, this report isn't so interesting. hated chaing mai, full of thai people who are just so jaded by tourism that they're really not friendly. lots of begging and scams. just sucked. headed south to mae sariang on the advice of a french volunteer, got stuck there for about 3 days but met some really cool people. had an interesting experience on our final night, deciding to have a few drinks we went across the street, and then went into the town centre for pool and karaoke (on motorbikes of course, and drunk of course). after that we headed out of town to scott's house ( a volunteer there) and the kiwi guy being a total dick started weaving around on the road. vidar and tuk started in and bang, tuks dazed and passed out in a telephone booth and vidar is unconsious on the road with his head at a funny angle with blood streaming from the back of his head. fuck. thought he was dead. took him to the hospital and sat there for a few hours. he was okay, only missing teeth and grazes!
the next day i headed up to chiang rai to meet jane and steve for my adventure via slow boat into laos.
