After chilling for a few days in Bucharest, I headed up into the mountains of central Romania, the area known as Transylvania. Famous for Vlad the Impaler, commonly known as Dracula, this area is a beautiful mix of castles, forests, and some of the most incredible mountains you will ever see.

At one of the hostels in Brasov I met a girl who, upon seeing my hiking equipment, asked if I wanted to go hiking deep into the mountains. I believe I had said yes before my mind had even registered the question.

We spent the next several days hiking well above the tree line during the day, and staying at a cabana in the evening. The views were absurdly spectacular. Also of interest - The mountainous region sports thousands of caves, many of which became residence to hermits during the middle ages. Several of the more well known hermitages were then later turned into full monasteries. We visited one of the monasteries, whose cave portion expanded over a 30 minute walk back into the mountain itself.
