12/19- It took 3 buses to get to Tacuba, with a mad dash through a busy market following a little old lady. No kidding this woman was fast, I almost lost Casey twice when I got held up by a slow moving family. Once at Tacuba we found The Momma and Poppa hostel and settled into the casita. This was basically the store shed with a bed. The main reason we are here is to get a guide and hike down through the N.P. Imposible to the visitors center. Manolo the guide is the son of mamma and poppa. After talking with Manolo we found out that he only will do that hike for groups of 5 or more because gas for the truck to take our bags is too expensive. Disappointed we decided on the waterfall hike which we heard from some other travelers was very good. Did some Internet and went to bed early because I was exhausted. Bad nights of sleep have finally caught up with me.
12/20- Had some home cooking from momma. While chatting with the other guests at breakfast, we mentioned that we had slept like rocks the night before. A Dutch guy replied, "So you probably didn't feel the five earthquakes last night?" We laughed and he continued, "You think I am joking, but I'm not." Apparently everybody but us woke up for them. Then we climbed into Manolo's rusty truck to head into Imposible National Park. The ride up was exciting in that his truck smoked on some of the bigger hills. He just kept saying ´its ok we'll make it... I think.´ At the start of our hike we met our second guide, the guy with the machete. We followed him down a trail through a coffee finca down to the river. Manolo claimed we were the first tourists on this trail because he usually went a different way. We hiked along the river with beauty all around us. We hiked next to and sometimes in the river, it was a great hike. Then we got to the first jump. We had to jump off the falls into the pool about 4 meters below. Casey had no problems and jumped right in, I was more hesitant but also made the jump. The next jump was a bit higher but again after a little nervousness we both made the jump. A few small ones followed and some more swimming in the river till we got to the bigger jump. This one was about 8 meters. Casey was a bit more hesitant on this one but after syking herself up she made the plummet with no problems. I however could not get myself to jump off of this rock. And with the help of our two guides I was lowered down by rope to a lower rock that I jumped from. I felt shamed by Casey but she is just that much tougher than me. The rest of the hike was amazing and we got to the biggest waterfall of the day. No, we did not jump off this one but we hiked down the side and sat at the bottom. Very cool. There was an optional jump of 10 meters that I again declined but Casey did with out a problem. Check out the video. The hike back out to the car was easy enough through more coffee farms and then the ride back to town. This time highlighted by Manolo singing 80's metal band tunes without the help of a radio. Wow there IS someone worse than Casey when it comes to singing! It was a great day and was topped of by some more home cooking by momma.
