The travelpod has kinda got out of order but finally here's the tale of New York City. We were actually staying in Queens which is the borough to the east of manhattan in a fairly nice best western. To get to manhattan we had to get a hotel shuttle bus to the subway station, which was above ground at this point on the line, then get the subway for bout 45mins and we got straight into times square so it turned out to be pretty conveniant!!

We drove in late on a saturday afternoon so went to times square that evening which i think was the best way to do it. Me and armelle had never been to NY so it was amazing to come in on the subway and see the sun setting over the skyline and then coming out of the station at times square at night with all the lights everywhere - it was sooo awesome!! Becca guided us about a bit until we had seen all the lights from every angle, it totally epitomised all-american excess!!

Because Becca had seen NY a few times before and needed to do some diss work she spent a stressful couple of days chasing after libraries but eventually did end up wiv some useful info from the final day. The first two days me and armelle were stuck to a pretty tight schedule which meant that we saw Grand Central Station, Empire State Building, Macys (the largest store in the world), Madison Square Garden, Herald Square, Brooklyn (by mistake after getting the wrong subway!), Ground Zero, Wall Street, NY stock exchange, South Port Seaway, 5th Avenue, Trump Tower, Tiffanys and Bloomies (which were both shut), which took 12 hours on the first day, we missed the curfew we had set ourselves by three hours though (sorry becca!). On the second day we saw the UN where Armelle took a tour while i secretely went on a wild goose chase round the city looking for a certain something for her birthday - the edge of Grenwich Village, East Village - St Marks Place, Garment District, after that we met up again and went to Canal Street (loads of cool knock off cheap stuff), Chinatown (Armelle had a $1.25 noodle lunch - bargain!!), Grenwich Street (!), Flatiron building, Radio City Music Hall, Rockerfeller Plaza, St Patricks Cathedral (where we sheltered from a very heavy rainstorm), Waldorf Astoria hotel, and finally Bloomingdales which was open this time!

When we got back armelle took an abnormally long time to get in the shower while me and becca were quietly freaking out about when we were gonna sort her present out seeing as midnight was fast approaching. This meant that when her birthday actually began we were down the corridor applying fabric paint in the fire escape stairs!!

Armelles 21st!!! After a lovely phone call from her parents armelle got some pressies! A calgary tshirt from Katie which she really loved, and from me and becca a I (heart) NY tshirt wiv 21 NY 07/06/05 stenciled on the back with black and red fabric paint and the condition it had to be worn for the day!

Armelle had planned a morning at the statue of liberty and afternoon in central park. Although we ended up doing everything it did get pushed back a bit because of the long wait on the ferry etc which took a lot longer than we expected. We were too late for the indoors tour but managed to arrive there just in time for a ranger led tour of the grounds of liberty island. The tour guide was so classic - old school park ranger wiv strangely undersized uniform, a massive bottle of water attached to his hip and a kind of geekiness about him. As much as we tried to listen what he was saying just started going straight out the other ear and by the time we got round to the front of the statue we just walked away from the group - no offence to him but it was so boring!!! The statue was really amazing - its so impressive to think of how old it is and how it has withstood all the tourists over the years. Up until 1916 people were allowed up some stairs in the arm and could stand in the flame! We got some pics of the statue and the south of manhattan and then headed back to the boat.

We got to central park quite late and looked around for horses for a carriage ride but all we could see were police men and women everywhere - mainly standing in random groups. We hoped it was some kind of practise exercise and kept looking. Eventually we decided the best thing to do was go back and get a bike ride from a guy on a bike wiv a rickshaw(?) on the back. It turned out to be just as good and cheaper. He took us all round the southern part of the park and pointed out all the sights, including famous peoples apartments, and we payed a bit extra to be taken all the way to bloomingdales. This was so the best part of the trip cos it was rush hour by that time and we were going through the streets of new york on the back of a bike with him trying to squeeze through every gap possible, it was a lot of fun!!! In bloomingdales armelle picked up some chocolates that her mum had arranged for - it was very exciting and the chocolates were lovely - it was a really nice little shop. We finally made our way home to get ready for the nite out.....

So we turned up to the restaurant about an hour after we sed we would but thankfully claire and her friend had got our message and so we eventually caught up wiv them a few mins later and went into Bubba Gumps Shrimp Restaurant!!! Its all forrest gump themed inside and the food and cocktails were both very nice! Our server got the other people working there together and they sang armelle a song and gave her a special drink for her bday which was cool as she was legal in america for the first time! After the meal we said goodbye to claire and headed to times square brewery round the corner.... Armelle has a lot of the events on her camcorder so im not goin to elaborate. Armelle had an awesome birthday and we both liked our first visit to new york very much!! None of us were very happy the next day though because of our lack of sleep, 30 degree heat and lack of air conditioning in the car... we did make it to washington though eventually, well a very nice campsite in maryland and set up.
