So I guess the epic journey that I have planned for this year started a little earlier than planned.  What better way to start the year than with a spontaneous last minute trip to New York City with Kathryn (and Jen).

Bit of background for those that don't know; Kathryn is a friend of a friend and we met last February (2011).  Both working in events and being the rather loud bubbly people that we are, we hit it off straight away.  We both love to travel too, while I was in Asia, she was climbing Macha Picchu in Peru (as you do)....!  We've met a couple of times since, but when I replied to her facebook post of 'Who wants to come to New York with me?' with 'Me, me, I wanna come pick me', I was actually only joking.... But she picked me all the same and weeks later we were having a pint at Heathrow celebrating our pending trip.

Jen is Kathryn's boss, maybe not direct boss (still not sure), but they are great friends too.  Jen was in NYC for a conference (boo to working), but we managed to meet up in the evenings a couple of times.

Anywho, the day started with a 05:45 alarm....  Last minute wash stuff chucked into the rucksack, 1 slice of toast and off I go.  Tram, train, tube, tube, Terminal 3 - Virgin Atlantic.  Check in was interesting, it's all done by computers now, and I just wanted a human being, is that too much to ask.  So I treated myself to some lovely perfume at duty free, then there isn't much left to do apart from get a pint of beer with our breakfast, right?!

The plane was a little squished, I'm not huge, and I feel sorry for anyone wider than me... I watched Bridesmaids - Poop!  Watched Crazy, Stupid, Love - love it.

Took 2 hours to go through passport control, TWO HOURS!!  Nice cab ride into the city (thanks to Jen's expense account).

I was very impressed with the hotel actually.  Ok so it needs a lick of paint or two, but we had a double bed each, in practically two separate rooms (only connected by an archway), a bathroom each, and large, I mean it was pretty perfect.

Once we'd unpacked we headed out to Times Square which was conveniently located only a couple of blocks away.  It's SO bright!!  I just stood and stared for a long old while.  Then ran up the red steps (featured in Glee).  Met Jen and went for dinner, Probably could have headed further than the first restaurant we came to, but we were hungry....  It was food, drink bed for us.  Asleep by 10pm is lame for me, but bearing in mind I had been awake for 22.5 hours, my bed was calling.  The highlights of my day were; yellow taxi's, Times Square and steamy manhole covers.... So New York.
