What I did
Whale watching!!
After Sharks Bay we went onto a little town called Carnevan. Here we visited the Gasgoine River which only flows 120 days out of the year and is one of the wonders of Western Australia. We pulled up in old Rosey knocked up a couple of boiled eggs and ham sandwichs and had a little picnic out in the bush (was very out-backy! all red sand and RED HOT!! very peaceful and beautiful). Next stop after here was the Blowholes and all i can say about those is WOW!!!!!!!! Absolutely breathtaking these blowholes shoot water from the crashing sea up tp 30 metres in the air with massive King Waves bashing on the rocks. You view them from the edge of a cliff and if your patient enough to hang around you'll spot the occasional whale splashing and flipping out of the sea. We did!! We did!! Infact we saw a few and with the freak waves smashing on the cliffs and blowholes shooting high in the air the view was just spectacular. We could have stayed there all day but as it was getting late we went off to find a campsite for the night, (we were in the middle of nowhere with no signal on our phones as we were just surrounded by desert). The first campsite we came to guided by the Camp 6 book looked very much like a gypo site so we opted for the only other site in the area. Good choice too!! To get there we had to travel 40 km right next to the ocean therefore had superb views of the coastline, craggy cliffs and MORE WHALES!!! Magical. The campsite itself was great too, an old cattle farm right next to the cliffs- fab fab fab for whale watching!! Me and Ryan took a couple of chairs onto one of the cliffs and had a few hours playing eye-spy, drinking wine and seeing who could spot the most whales (i won hands down on both games). At one point i think the nearest whale was only literally 30 metres from the shore...amazing!!!
Our neighbours in the next caravan greeted us by shouting over "what we got here another 2 POHM's??" (we must have English wrote all over our faces...although having said that we have been asked by at least 3 Aussies if we're Irish?!!! Ha ha thats Yorkshire for thi!!). Anyway although he was another OAP he was lovely and invited us round to his gaff for a fire and drinks at night. The thing with getting talking to older Aussies is its all good for tips and knowledge cos this guy seemed to know everything!! I was again left slightly traumatised when what appeared to be a MASSIVE grasshopper (forgot the real name) landed right on my leg scaring me half to death with how high it could jump, then as always bringing his whole family. So after this i couldn't rest and made sure i had socks pulled up, trainers on, long sleeves and my hoody up in order to protect myself from the dangers of the night. Basically i just made sure the only parts of my body on show were my eyes to see and my lips to drink wine. Ryan says i could do with a space suit but thats just daft!! Apart from been scared of the creepy crawly's been out in the bush at night is amazing cos you look up to see millions and millions of stars and on a clear night away from all the light pollution you can even see the milky way!!! We enjoyed the campsite and the whale watching so much we ended up staying 2 nights then it was time to pack up and move to our next destination. Next stop Coral Bay!!!
