Lynne.....

Happily it was one of Gary's better ideas to come to Padangbia, the drive down was lovely and so much more enjoyable knowing that the five hour ferry journey and bus ride were now planned for the next day. We hired a private driver again, it sounds a bit posh but the difference between squashing into minibus with lots of other smelly backpackers or having our own car and driver who will stop if we see something good was 1.50...what would you have done??  We passed pretty villages and lovely green hillsides as we came through the middle of Bali, it was interesting to see areas of Bali that are not touched by the tourist trade.  Once in Padangbia we found a nice clean room with a four poster bed and a great view of the dead centre of town.........in other words a grave yard!!   I kept Gary up most of the night telling him ghost stories......we slept with the light on.

We have been to Padangbia before on our last trip and I remember it for being a town that promotes the sport of cock fighting, we stayed three nights last time (because I was ill) and were rudely awoken every morning with an almighty din of Cocka Doodle Dooing. Looking round the town nothing has changed, we met two gentlemen proudly stroking their large rooster and were only too pleased to show off their might birds with a small demonstration.  The bird’s flapped about and danced round each other until the men’s backs where turned and they both took off down the road at high speed together.  We left with the two guys frantically chasing after them.

Padangbia is a small port town, the main reason to go there is to take the Ferry to Lombok or a fast boat to the Gili’s.  Most people just pass through always moving on and not really looking at the town, which is a shame because it is very pretty.  It is a small bay, with sandy beaches and great diving just off shore (so we have been told) and is surrounded by green hills. There are a number of really amazing looking hotels and the seafront has some lovely restaurants.

It was a great to come back and visit another town from our past.
