Lynne......

Our last day in Luang PraBang had us racing back to our guest house as the skies opened and it poured down for the whole evening. We watched it come down for a bit from our balcony (which involved climbing out our window Friends style).  We tried to watch a film but that was a little difficult as the power kept going off and on, it's no wonder they have so many kids out here!!

We got a mini bus out of Luang PraBang the next morning at 8.30am and six hours later we arrived uneventfully in Vang Vieng.  Having checked into a guest house (hot water and TV) we roamed the streets in search of food....what else!  First thing you notice about the town is all the restaurants and bars have huge chill out areas, rather than chairs and tables.  All these areas face the TV and that is blasting out reruns of Friends or Family Guy.  The restaurants all serve European food but luckily not with tacky pictures.  This is a party town with most people only coming here for one thing....... Tubing!!

Ok what is tubing?  Take one free flowing river, throw in 10 -12 river side bars, mix in 30-40 drunk tourists and sit them in rubber inner tubes and you have a perfect recipe for Tubing.

We waited until day 3 before braving the tube clad tuk tuks that take you up stream.  Like everything we have found in Laos it was very professionally run.  You pay your fee 4.35 each and get your tube and a number (which is written on your arm).  You have to pay a deposit in case you lose your tube but you get that back when you return and show your number.  I think this is also a way to clock who goes in and who comes back.  The tuk tuk takes you 3km to the starting point and you’re now on your own.  The journey back to the town by river should be about 2 hours but as it is dry season the river isn’t very fast flowing so they think about 3 hours.  It took us 5 hours just to get to the 7th bar and by this point we were too drunk to go any further and had to get a boat to take us and our rings back home.

It wasn’t our fault we got drunk, as you float passed the bars in your rubber ring they throw a tow rope out and pulled you in.  They then give you free stuff like shots of Tiger Whiskey (which really is moonshine) or chips.  Each bar had something extreme to do, jump in the river from a trapeze, or a zip wire.  Mud volleyball or tug of war was also up for offer, or you could just run and jump in all the mud which is the line Gary took......two days later he is still complaining of mud in his sinuses.  There was also a big slide which was my down fall, it was very fast and I hit the water..... well put it this way, I was told that as I hit the water, the whole bar took a sharp intake of breath followed by 'that’s got to hurt’.  I have a bruised bum and back and a slight dislike for slides.

We actually quite like this town, even though we do feel old - most of the cliental are in their twenties, but the laid back bars, great food and party atmosphere reminds us of the Islands in Thailand again.  We were going to go tubing again today, but this time without the stop off at all the bars.  However I woke up with day two hangover and couldn't face it, and Gary was still bruised and aching from his turn down the SLIDE OF DEATH.  We really are old!!!!!

So had a chilled day, walk to the bus station the book our ticket and Gary bought his Tubing vest which is a must for any post tuber.  Having a roast dinner tonight, when in Rome.......!!  Like all traditional roast dinners buy two get a free bucket of whiskey and coke.

We are off at 10am tomorrow morning for a four hour express bus down to Vientiane the capital city.
