Had some time and went to the zoo in San Antonio today.  Sometimes we are zoo aficionados and sometimes not.    I go up and down the scale on different days and different locations on liking zoos and not liking them.  We have visited all types on the scale too from little poodunk flea bitten barely enough money to feed the animals to great zoos like San Diego and Singapore and pretty much everything in between.

Some of the more interesting ones: Staying outside Irkutsk, Russia, our host told us we could walk to the "beer cage".  As my husband is a beer drinker, we followed her instructions so we could get a beer.  Turns out she was directing us to the local town "bear cage".   This local family had been keeping bears in cages for years for the locals to see and the few tourists that wandered into town.  We were a bit sorry to see the sad state of the bears and also not to get any beer.  They were very small cages.

A bigger zoo we visited to our dismay was Shanghai, albeit about 10 years ago.  I do hope it has improved since then.  it was one of the dirtiest zoos we've ever seen with people everywhere just throwing trash on the ground and throwing anything they had into the cages to see if the animals would eat them.  This included the panda cage.  no wonder they are endangered.

Have had some happier experiences at other places including one spot with my daughter where we were allowed to drop meat down a large PVC pipe to lions waiting on the other side.  Were also allowed to feed the giraffes there.  Some small zoos never can get people to visit unless they have a hook like that.  We were also lucky enough to visit some spots in Australia when they still let you hold koalas and wombats.  That has stopped.

Anyway, back to the San Antonio zoo.  it was rather small but they are doing a pretty good job it seemed.  Wasn't a hot day so we did get to see a good many of the animals out and moving about except the cats of course.  Cats are almost always asleep.  All the animals looked healthy and the cages were clean and there were plenty of keepers around doing animal care type of things.  It was pretty crowded but quite an enjoyable afternoon.  What's nice about going to the zoo is that we almost always find an animal we have forgotten about or haven't seen.   There was a butterfly house with quite a few flitting about.  We were checked as we left to make sure we didn't have any hitchhikers on us.  One poor young boy was terrified of them and started screaming the minute he walked into the cage.  they exited rather quickly.  The hippos had a nice stretch of water and bounced slowly from one end of it to the other.  They look absurdly funny tiptoeing along the bottom.

So a very enjoyable afternoon.  Not a big zoo again but very nice and good for the local kids.  Probably won't ever go back but was a good stop since we were here.
