Where I stayed
You might recall way back when that I stated there were two reasons to come to Sabang, Puerto Galera, Philippines. One reason, my reason, is scuba diving. It is the main reason I think that most people come here. It appears that the other reason is to find a Filipina honey. This does not necessarily mean the world's oldest profession but it definitely does mean that sometimes.
In defense of the girls here from neighboring islands and villages and towns, they come here because there are men here with money. The ones that I have talked to are looking for something permanent, a relationship, someone to take care of them. They usually are looking for older men because that usually means more money. It also seems that most of the expat men living here, running a restaurant, bar, or dive shop, have found someone to love and there are mixed marriages here or in some cases, just mixed relationships because the Philippines does not allow divorce. So if a woman was married once and it didn’t work, they can get an annulment but that is a system ripe with bribes thus it takes a whole lot of money to get an annulment and the village ladies usually can’t afford it.
The girls who can’t find a permanent relationship remain here in the hopes that someone will show up eventually to fall in love with them. Sometimes they end up with 2 to 6 month relationships as there are a lot of retired men who come for extended periods of time to dive. The whole system works for them and works for the tourists, for the most part. It is easy to tell which girls are still looking though as they head out to the bars in the early evening in their best clothes.
This is also an extended family country. I haven’t figured out all the ins and outs of that yet but apparently whoever is paying for the kids/women/young men gets the privilege of being called Daddy by all of them. His wife then becomes Mama Melanie, or Mama Jennifer, or whatever her name is. The kids seem to know who their biological mom is but they will run to any of their mama’s for help, consoling, money, or whatever. Sometimes from the looks of things, it appears that everybody within a several block area is related somehow. They do certainly know each other and live so close together that everyone knows the business of all their neighbors.
Like I said, this all works for them but I’m not sure I could make it work for me. I do like some privacy and some space around me and some quiet time. Wouldn’t get any of that here.
