Where I stayed
We've taken several bus tours in Australia now, in all the locations where we have been: Perth, Darwin, Alice Springs, Sydney and Uluru. The tours pick you up at your hotel in the morning or afternoon, everyone else gets collected and then the driver puts on a headset and starts with the patter. In all cases, the driver has known his stuff (never had a woman on any of the tours) so that part is good but apparently the drivers have been told not to allow any silent spaces in their talks. They all just rattle on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on – well, you get the picture.
In most cases, the patter is good and fun but some of the drives have been quite long and the bus drivers/guides just don’t have enough to say about the surrounding location
They are all characters too. Many tell jokes and tell stories and it’s fun and good. On occasion we have had a couple of drivers whose very voices were sonorous and could be used as a soporific. It’s not a job I would like to have though. They have to drive, and apparently keep people entertained as well. Definitely not something I want to do. More power to them because it’s not an easy job. I think the thing I would have the most problem with is the constant talking. Don’t think I have ever spent an entire day talking all the time.
