As we walked through the Old Town, we would stop in various places; she’d put down her lantern, and tell us a tale. One was regarding the famous astrological clock on the old city hall. When it was made, it was quite famous and brought trade to the city as people came to see it. The town fathers were very worried that the maker of the clock would be offered more money to make the same kind of clock for another town and that would hurt their trade
Close to the clock are 27 crosses in the sidewalk. These represent 27 Protestants who were beheaded for their faith and their heads hung on Charles Bridge for 10 years as a warning to other Protestants. But the executioner who had to behead them felt sympathy for them so he made sure his swords were extra sharp so they would not suffer (it was also his job to make people suffer as they died). So also on the sidewalk are two sets of crossed swords to remind people of the executioner who did his duty but had compassion.
This same executioner became compassionate because the woman he loved became pregnant by another man before he was married to her. Because she was not married she was thrown into jail. Our compassionate executioner was quite an educated man but he still was in love with his lady. The only people who could see prisoners were priests and executioners so he became an executioner so that he could see her and tried to help her escape but he was caught
Assam took us to a church that was supposedly haunted because many people had been buried there. She wanted us to take flash photos of the church in the hopes of finding an “orb” in my photos. I took photo after photo with no luck. She was very disappointed. My lens was too clean.
We ended up in the square again and I took some photos of Tyn Church lit up in the night. As I looked at the last photo I took, there was an orb in it! Assam was quite excited that I had captured a paranormal spirit of some kind. My husband promptly looked up “orbs” in photos when we arrived back at our hotel. It seems they are caused by backscatter of dust particles during flash photography. Good thing we didn’t see Assam again as I wouldn’t have the heart to tell her that her “orbs” are truly just bad photography.
It was a good Ghost tour but we didn’t hear the golem story of Prague which is apparently quite a good tale and a few others as well. Ah, but I caught an “orb”.
