It only seems fitting that my final blog for this year's Mexican adventure should be about the project that has consumed the lion's share of our time - Barry's new house, " Casa San Jorge".  First a bit of background on how it came to be that Barry came to visit us for 10 days and left a new homeowner.  Barry like us, is getting to the age where he is looking at retirement in the not too distant future, and for years he has toyed with various ideas for a rental property.  Part of his criteria was that it had to be something that would also have a "fun factor" for him, more than a lucrative business venture.  At times he has considered a B&B in Toronto, and more recently, a condo in Playa Del Carmen.  Fast forward to last year when he spent considerable time researching and communicating with an agent in Playa, with the intent of taking a short trip there to view property.  When he came to visit us in San Miguel this year, there was a loose plan to take a short side trip to Playa with Mark to do this.  That is where the path took a fork.  We spent a lot of time discussing the pluses and minuses surrounding rental houses in San Miguel vs. condos at a beach location.  Hmmm,  the potential for wild young partying tenants intent on sun, fun, and copious margaritas in your home or mature somewhat more reliable guests  more interested in the arts, history, and  "getting out of the Canadian cold". What to do?  All of this talk led us to a very impromptu stop into The Select Real Estate office, next door to Harry's New Orlean's Bar and Grill, which was our actual destination.  There, we met with a very lovely and personable sales agent, Ariadna, who soon had us convinced to look at a few properties.  After viewing about 6 or 8 houses; all very nice in their own way, but none lighting a fire in us, we stepped through the outer doors of what was to become Casa San Jorge; Barry's new house, and mine and Mark's future winter "home away from home".  The choice of a name for the house was obvious; the house is on San Jorge street, Barry's middle name is George (Jorge), and Barry's late father's name was George - obviously, this was meant to be!
The style of the house is somewhat traditional Mexican, as opposed  to modern contemporary.  At the time of the purchase, the house was partially furnished and in need of sprucing up.  Barry edited the contents severely and completed the furnishing with carefully chosen pieces to create the personality he envisioned. In addition we gave a lot of thought to outfitting the house, particularly the kitchen and bathrooms with everything necessary for a comfortable and worry free stay. His wonderful sense of taste and style is evident throughout the home and the end result is a beautiful peaceful oasis on a quite street, serene and private, but conveniently located close to all the major attractions of San Miguel. Barry will be renting out his house year round, and I urge anyone interested to take a look at his website www.houserentalinSanMiguel.com and also his listing on www.homeaway.com.  The property is listing # 975197.

... and what Carol is graciously not telling you is the vast amount of work Carol and Mark did to make Casa San Jorge a reality. This came in the form of great advice based on their years of experiences as renters in San Miguel, repair work around the house and the occasional hug and shared glass of wine when the stress of setting up an entire household in 2 weeks got to be a bit much.
