Where I stayed
After the rain stopped we finally got to see the real Rio. The weather still wasn't great but we really got to see the appeal of Rio during the breaks in the clouds. The first "touristy" thing we did was take the cable car up the Sugar Loaf, to say I was terrified was an understatement! I recommend not watching James Bond Moonraker before going up. The view from the top gives you a real idea of why Rio is so special, sheer mountains, covered with rainforest separate the different districts of the city, mostly flowing down into pure white sandy beaches. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the symbol of Rio, Christ the Redeemer (aka the Big Jesus) was playing ball and stayed in the clouds.
We put this right the next day by taking a trip up to the big Jesus. The tram ride up was steep but did mean we went through the rainforest and managed to see a Toucan (we have some very blurry photos!) and a sloth and had great views of Rio. The Big Jesus attracts huge swarms of crowds so getting a picture in front of him is impossible, the views looking down on Rio are amazing, Rio definitely must be seen from above. We played hide and seek with the Big Jesus as he kept disappearing into the clouds, but it did make for some eerie photos.
We caught a game at the Maracana stadium to see Flamengo play Friburguense. There was a great atmosphere with 36,000 passionate fans, the football was incredibly skilful but sooo slow, it would kill me to watch it week in week out. What stuck me was watching the game you just need to look up and the Fevela's loom large over the stadium.
So our time in Rio is up and its time for the next stop.
