From Bridgeport we took Highway 89 to Lake Tahoe, a fantastic alpine type route.

South Lake Tahoe is a very busy town - we stayed on the quiet west shore of the lake at Meeks Bay Campground, deep in the heart of black bear territory. We spent three nights here, spending the days walking in the Desolation Wilderness and swimming in the lake (cold).

On the second night, we were sitting around a campfire with a local couple when there was a loud rustling behind us and we turned around to see a bear less than 2 metres away, stealing food from the open bear locker! We chased it away (they can certainly move quickly), but over the next hour it roamed around the campsite looking for more food and in the process got itself shut in a car which it proceeded to trash. Eventually a posse of campers drove it from the campsite.
