Yesterday Ila's parents, she and I drove to the seaside. Finally it had stopped raining and we could enjoy the last bit of the Italian summer. It felt like I should be in a movie, it was so neat to see a typical town on the Italian sea side. It wasn't real warm out by Italian standards but it was great as far as I was concerned. I was the only one of the bunch that went swimming but I couldn't pass up a chance to swim in the Mediterranean. The water was the warmest water I have ever swam in....especially contrasted with the last body of water I swam in: Lake Superior) I had a blast, felt like a little kid swimming for the first time...although I still can't get used to the salty water...blah!
From there we went to have lunch at a great little Italian restaurant. We sat outside with olive trees all around us. We took a walk then and were able to pick ripe lemons, olives and figs off the trees in the area!
After lunch we went to a cave that was nearby for a tour. It has fossils of prehistoric animals and was quite interesting. Lucky for me I have my own personal professional translator for all the tours---and Ila gets good practice for her profession!
We got home just in time for supper at 9pm and then Ilaria and I went out with her best friend for the night. I couldn't leave Turin without seeing it by night! :)

The original plan for my time here in Italy was to spend a couple days in the mountains and then she and I were going to go to Venice for a night or two, neither of the two happened because of the weather (I guess there is a state emergency in Venice because of the large amounts of rain ? ) but I've very much enjoyed Italy, Turin, Ila's family and have seen and done more than I expected! We'll see what the next week has in store for me!

Today was just a day for relaxing, I'm packing up and getting ready to leave bright and early tomorrow for a loooong train ride to Colonge and then on to meet Anna Berger the next day in Northern Germany. Just a warning, I'm not sure what my internet access will be like in the next week or so. I'm hoping to update once in a while, but I don't know what to expect as I will be jumping around quite a bit. If I dont get to post much now, when I get to Switzerland in October you'll hear from me !:)

I did get to try something unique as far as food goes...I was a little leary of it but we had RAW beef today for lunch. Both slices, as well as just plain ground meat. It was interesting and actually not so bad. Ila's mom soaks it in lemon juice for about 15 minutes to 'cook' it and then they eat it. So now I can add that to my list of interesting foods. Its evidently typical of this region of Italy.
