i made it! the trip was a little rocky, as to be expected for whenever i travel. they lost both of my checked bags which hopefully i will get in the next week.  so i am braving it without sunscreen or bug repellent! luckily i did carry on my clothing and most necessary items.  oh and a bag was rolled over my foot so i now do not have two toenails.  henry helped me at the airport desk and he wants to visit me now... everybody is so welcoming.

we got in after midnight here in iganga.  it was a three hour drive from the airport.  a little bit of scary drive; i dont think grandma would approve BUT i made it.  here the rule of pedestrians having the right away is not true, boulder has not prepared me for the real world! ha ha

i am staying with andrea and leah at micheal's home.  i guess the sister i will be staying with is at an aids/hiv walk and will get back next week.  the whole family was up waiting for us and they are amazing.  there are four girls from his first wife.  i adore them!  ana is about 18months and she follows us around and likes to show me her ragdoll... i have swapped hand clapping games with the other girls but turns out that i am not very good which makes them laugh a lot.  they love down by the banks of the hanky panky.  we slept in pretty tight quarters with mosquito nets over top of us. there is not any electricity but there is a gravity system toilet in our room...  we finally figured out how to flush it today.  the room is darling.  with all sorts of colors on the walls.

today we have been walking around the town, playing scrabble, and having an orientation.

the food here is a hit and miss but there is plenty.  i feel bad not eating it all but wow they just feed us and feed us.  i did have to spit my meat out into my hand and then i had to hold it there for an hour.  \

everybody is amazing!  i already love it here.  it is gorgeous.  when we walk around all the kids run out onto the street and yell at us.  everybody is so welcoming and they shake our hands and hug us.

hopefully i can write again soon!!

miss you and love you all!

amazing!
I am so happy to hear that you arrived there safely! Wow what an experience- I can almost wfeel like I'm there from what you wrote-I can't wait to hear more. Moses is doing great- he is now sleeping outside our door at night and is so excited to see me in the morning- he does his food dance. We go on 3 walks a day and sit outside together in the late afternoons. If I say your name he perks up and looks around- he misses you but is content to wait until you come back.
Love you Sal- Mom

Hey hey!!!
So out of ten toe nails you now have a total of seven! haha man that sucks...its sounds like your trip started off really rocky, all the crap at the airport and now your bags are lost! I will def be praying that they are returned to you as soon as possible. But it sounds like God totally took care of the one thing you were actually nervous about...first getting there and trying to get settled in the middle of the night. Its awesome that you get to spend your first week in the same place as andrea and leah...that will help you adjust and then by the time the sister comes back from her walk you will be well aquianted with things! I miss you so much and am so glad to hear that you made it safe and that you love the village. I love you and can't wait to hear from you again soon! I'll be praying for you!!

Sounds like you are having an amazing and adventurous time in Africa! I can't believe your checked bags were lost... typical! But I am sure something wonderful will come your way to make it better... who knows, maybe your bags will arrive with a winning lottery ticket pinned to them? Or maybe you will just keep the rest of your toenails for the rest of the trip. I love you and miss you so much sal pal, but I am excited that your Aftican adventure is under way! love you.

PS - Are you getting the rhythm yet for your hand clapping with the girls? :) It's probably hard with the claw - thumb!

Sally C-

What an adventure! Things I want you to do:

1. Wear a pith helmet
2. Grow a bushy white mustache
3. Adopt the privileged tones of a British safariman, circa 1899.
4. Take a picture of a Rhino for your friend John-John.

The last one is the most important. Also, if you come back to me safe and sound, picture of Rhino in hand, you can call me 'John-John' (much as I hate it) for life with absolute impunity.

love,
john

PS did you know safari means 'journey' in Swahili? Thanks, internet!
