Wow! What a terrific day! And not really because of diving in the Indian Ocean. Today was special for so many little things. Despite a poor night’s sleep (I think it was the sand in the bed), I got up early to a lovely breakfast. At breakfast, I met Sarah, Darren and Davin; three hearing-impaired Americans. Sarah taught me to sign my name in ASL (which is vastly different to BSL). I recommended Kendwa beach to them and off they went.
My destination was a different today i.e. the east coast and Paje/Bwejuu. And off I went. Waiting for the bus took awhile but it gave me the chance to see the coming and goings of the daladala terminal. What a hive of activity that is. Here I met Hassan who helped me locate and get my bus to the east coast.
The journey there was just so interesting. For one of the first times since this journey began, I felt like I was getting off the beaten track and seeing things and people I would not see normally!
Passing through Tunguu, the main road was shut so the bus took another route some really interesting parts of town. Wow! We then passed through the lovely Jozani Forest. Coconut palms everywhere. Even the initial clouds did not cast a shadow over the day which was great fun.
Late afternoon, I took the time to see some of the slave sites in Stonetown. This was kind out of a kind of sense of obligation and respect to these people. I also had a wander through the market which seemed to have many stalls selling spices (which is the other thing Zanzibar is famous for). And so came the end of a terrific day!
