At long last we were going to see the "big orange dunes of Sossusvlei"!  Very excited we set the alarm not to miss the sunrise.  It is an hours drive to the vlei so we had to get up at 5h30am Namibian time.  This is way early for Carlos.  We had the flask ready for coffee in the car on the way.

At first we could not see much as it was still too dark.  A couple of antilope along the road and a whole lot of visitors all up early to see what the day will bring.

The last 5km or so is stricktly 4x4 teritory due to deep sand. Our timing was good.  Just as we reached the end of the Sossusvlei road - the sun came up.  This changed the colour of the dunes and we went crazy with the camera.

Surprisingly, there is a whole lot of vegitation amongst the dunes.  As a matter of fact, if you look at the photos you will see that one battles to take a photo without vegitation in it. So much for the typical Sossusvlei photos.

There were a few tourist busses and hords of other vehicles.  Some were dropping eager climbers off to do the "Big Daddy"  climb.  They recon this is the highest dune in the world.  We did not even attempt to climb it.

A handy arrangement at the end of the "normal" vehicle section, is that they have 4 x 4 taxis that will take you the last 5 km into the dunes.  Keep in mind that this is an open air, cameviewing taxi, so be sure to dress warmly!!

Next on the agenda was Sesriem Canyon.
