We arrived in the sleepy surf town of Huanchaco to be a little disappointed that it wasn't too warm. Along the south and central coast of Peru the cold water combined with the desert means that the days are quite overcast and foggy. However, we scored ourselves a sweet 3rd floor apartment in a Hostal for A$6 each with our own bathroom, kitchen and balcony complete with hammock.
Thankfully the afternoons cleared up and in between two surfs a day I was able to hang in the hammock in the sun.
The water was cold so I hired a leaky wetsuit which didn't do much good, but had a couple of surfs a day. The swell was increasing throughout our stay, however I had lost all surf fitness after not being in the water for three months. I did manage to score a few long lefts and test out the new board. The longest left hand wave in the world (breaking for almost 2km on a good day) was only 40km up the coast and the locals said it was going to be good as the swell increased, however after a few surfs I realistically gave it a miss as I definitely wasn't in enough form to battle the strong currents.
So after a few days of relaxing we now start a 36 hour journey back down south to meet Pickles in Arequipa. We'll be back to the coast in a few weeks, hopefully in a place like this but with more sun!
