Welcome to the city of Angels! Or the city of celebrity, or the grubbiest place on earth, take your pick it all amount to the same place Hollywood. We arrived at Union station in Los Angeles after a short ride from Anaheim, and what a difference 40 minutes can make! Union station is not the cleanest place on earth, so after the quickest toilet break in the history of my life, we hopped another train to Hollywood/Highland station and then walked a few blocks to the USA Hostels Hollywood.

We had a private room, which had just enough room for the bed and our bags (if we sat on the bed). I had previously stayed at the hostel, and as a independent traveller it is a great place to meet people and have a good time. It is not somewhere I would recommend for a couple.

After checking in, we headed to Hollywood Boulevard to check out the walk of fame and Grauman’s Chinese theatre. Hollywood is quite underwhelming if you are expecting bright lights and celebrities and action around every corner. Even the stars on the walk of fame are covered in dirt and grime from the city. My description of Hollywood Boulevard would be; dirty and seedy with some good shopping, but not somewhere I would be hanging out past 11am. We headed back into our hostel after a cheap and cheerful Asian meal and decided to stay in and watch a movie for the night, which was difficult as we were in a room right next to the “bar” which meant you couldn’t hear your own thoughts let alone the television. At around 1pm Simon went downstairs to the check in desk and asked if they could close the door to the bar so that it was a little quieter, the receptionist was snarky in response and advised that we should have stayed somewhere else if I didn’t like noise. About 5 minutes later the door was closed, but we did vow never to stay at the USA Hostel Hollywood again if that was how they treated their guests.

The next day we hopped aboard a Starline Tours hop-on-hop-off bus which was a cheap way to see the sights of Los Angeles. We decided to hop off at Beverly Hills as it was lunchtime, and Nate N Al’s Delicatessen was our choice of eatery. This place is a historical eatery that was established in 1945. The food was scrumptious and we easily got a table (no wait), I highly recommend going here if you get a chance. We even got to celebrity spot with Jenna Elfman, most famous for TV series Dharma and Greg, sitting two tables away from us. After our lunch we wandered around Rodeo drive for a while, window shopping was what our budget allowed, and then headed back to the bus pick up location. Back on the bus we enjoyed the sunshine while getting whisked around to various tourist locations including the LA Farmers MarketParamount Studios and Pinks’ Hotdogs (yes that was a feature). Back on Hollywood boulevard we disembarked and headed back to the hostel before dinner. One place I can recommend for food if you are in the west hollywood area is Kitchen 24. This place is affordable with super delicious food, and yep, its open 24 hours.

The next morning we were up early and ready to hit the shops. Our flight to Sydney wasn’t scheduled until the evening so the whole morning was spent traipsing up and down Hollywood Blvd, getting my last dose of US prices. Farewell USA it has been fun, next stop (after 14 hours on a V Australia flight) Sydney, Australia!
