A lot can happen in a week….here's some highlights!

Kids houses…last
weekend we visited the area where the kids live, which is always a very humbly
and emotional experience. Calling them "houses" actually makes them out to be
better then they are…shacks or garden sheds would be closer to the truth. We
were welcomed with open arms and got to hear some individual stories. Yet in
the midst of such unbelievable poverty, one family bought us all a vanilla
milkshake and were insistent that the this was a treat for us. These
experiences always give some much needed perspective….

Preschool…we took
a class in preschool this week so Hambantota is adorn with 40 kids with
multi-coloured monkey masks. The hokey
pokey has made a comeback and is very much a crowd pleaser. We’ve also learned
a valuable lesson…children should avoid roundabouts straight after breakfast
(yeah pretty obvious in hindsight)..

Afterschool...We
have done craftwork with younger afterschoolers, games and helped them make
cards for their sponsors. It’s a bit hard to imagine that the cards they were
making are now going to be displayed on lots of fireplaces in the UK. Also it
turns out the “Titanic” song is a fav song amongst young Sri Lankans…I think
they enjoy our version more than Celine Dion’s…Music people of the world, I beg
of you that you import some decent music to Sri Lanka

Prison…We were
invited to an open prison, which has 166 men (mostly for drug crimes).  We were there for around 1 hour and were able
to share a few words with the men and sing them a song. A few of the men also
sang for everyone. Prison visits are always quite surreal experiences…there is
lots more I could say about this, but this isn’t really the place so just ask
me….

And the rest….we’ve
been on elephant safari, gone to an 11 year olds birthday party, covered our
hands in henna and “snap” moved to a whole new level with Hannah falling off
the sofa during it….

We have a day off today, so we’re off to see a few sights of
Lanka…no doubt there will be more stories to tell
