After breakfast it became apparent that the parents were taking up more space than anticipated and they also needed to use the children's tables. This meant the kids had to find an alternative place to go for the morning. The alternative place ended up being our living room! Naively we thought they would see it as a novelty and as the meeting would probably only last an hour, that would be a short time to fill
So in the house we had 30 under 5's plus Banuka on a bad day - this all spells absolute chaos!! We did all the favorites (hokey pokey, birdie song, row row row your boat) through an interactive DVD and thought we had passed a chunk of the morning-only to realize the clock had just struck 10am! We put on a "Bob the Builder" DVD and there was silence for 10minutes and then that was the end of their attention span. With no sign of the meeting finishing, we resorted to bringing in their toys to play with.
Chandima was the only teacher with Mark and I as the others were involved with the meeting. She went outside to get something for 5minutes and her last words were "you watch Banuka". He was having one of his funny days but I'd been able to keep him quite contained and so far he hadn't managed to make his way into any of the bedrooms or lock himself in a toilet! As soon as she left, Banuka darted for the back door and away he went into the middle of the meeting! Now he's not a little boy by any means, so having to carry him back inside has definitely increased my triceps! That was really the start of him trying to escape and everytime I let go off him he ran for a door! He was distracted when he got his picture taken (when he decided to look all sweet and innocent)-it's a pity taking a photo only last a split second
The sense of relief at 1145 when the meeting was over was felt throughout! After moving all the furniture back, putting the tables into the classroom and the 3 of us taking 2 paracetemols, it was time for lunch! Lunchtime is usually a quiet occasion but in the true spirit of today, of course it wasn't! Let's just say one of the boys was too busy eating to realize he really should have been at the toilet! He only said he needed to go when it was too late!
There was only one afterschool class today lasting an hour, instead of the usual 2 as a staff meeting was happening for the permanent staff, so we were teachers down. Compared to this morning it was a picnic, although there was slight chaos when the meeting went on later than expected meaning there was no one to accompany the children on the bus. Thankfully the faithful Ananas (sort of caretaker) came to the rescue and shipped them all off on the bus!
I have to say we were laughing the whole way through, even when we were pondering when the next available flight back to Belfast would be! Now that a few hours have passed, I'm thinking "was it really that bad"?! It's all good craic and a day to remember!
