Today we were invited to a "Homecoming". It's part of the traditional Sri Lankan wedding. It was Milani's (a teacher) brother who got married on Thursday. The Homecoming is like the wedding reception. All day people drop in and out to see the happy couple and food is served. It is a very big deal and a lot of money is spent on it. It takes place at the groom's parent's house and, halfway through the day, the brides side of the family "hand over" their daughter to the groom's family and then leave. There are still quite a few arranged marriages in Sri Lanka but I don't think this was because they had been going out for 10years! Also he is Christian and she is Buddhist. Not quite sure what happens if it's a mixed marriage, in terms of whether the bride has to convert. The ceremony took place at Pastor Victor's church so it was a Christian wedding.

Gordon and I were definitely given special treatment! We had our own chicken dish that had no spice in it, bottled water (everyone else drank out of tap) and a knife and fork. People here eat with there hands - haven't quite grasped that yet though!! Also, people were moved off their seats to let us sit down - we were quite happy standing!! Sri Lankan's hospitality definitely is second to none - they would do anything to accommodate you. I had to laugh because at the door as you went in there was a sound system with 5 big speakers and music was booming out. It was good to hear a hot of "Hotel California" and Backstreet Boys!

We had our first cultural faux pas as well - it was funny. Apparently as a sign that food is ready to be served, the host goes around with a tray and 2 glasses of water and as they pass you touch the tray. Of course we didn't know this and thought we were being offered a drink - but Victor quickly saved us. I think we got away with it!!

And today we had no rain - the sun shone!! Apparently it NEVER rains here - obviously I've brought a bit of Belfast with me! Hopefully that'll be it til October!
