after we had all had a good old laugh about it and calmed down, it was time for a parent teachers meeting. didn't understand a word of it but Renalli said it was to educate the parents of the preschool children as to how to fill out the application for their children to enter grade1. most if the parents aren't well educated, so smile always try and keep them informed and guide them as much as they can.
we then headed on out to tangalle prison - about 40km along the coast from Hambantota. what an experience. smile has close links with the prison. last year it bought the inmates a tv and sewing machine so they can make use of their time. the living conditions are appalling - due to them being short staffed, inmates are locked up in their cells from 6pm-6am. these cells are 8ft square, have no toilets, 1 small windown and around 60prisoners in each. you can't even stand up straight in the cells. no matter what anyone has done, they don't deserve to live in these conditions. there are around 530 inmates, 18being female. male and female are separted and woman have there children in with them.
the reason why we visited the prison was because of something amazing. the jail approached smile and had asked it they could build a small room in the prison where christians could worship. given that it is mainly buddhist, this is a wonderful request. the plans are in place and the building is going to start asap. it's only going to be a small square where inmates can go for some peace, but still such a great symbol of hope. it's going to sit opposite the buddah. during our visit, the governor also asked if smile could donate a brick making machine(i'm sure that's not the proper term) so that the prisoners had something constructive to do with their time, plus generate income for the prison. hopefully this will be given the go ahead.
renalli had now headed back home to columbo so it's just gordon and i ready to take on sri lanka! it as good having her around. on the plis side she'll be down every frw weeks.
tomorrow the school is closed as it's a full moon (apparently it's a buddish tradition) so i'm going to spend the day perparing for the week ahead!!
that's everything for now!
