Rockhampton to Mackay (pronounced M’ky) is a bit of a haul, so we thought we would break the trip into two segments and spend our first night in a free campground. Having never been to a free site, we entered St Laurence into the GPS. I’m not going to lie – it was a little bleak. It’s a small, small town (I think a population count of 50 would include pets) and the free camping is in the parking lot of the rodeo grounds. We simply pulled into the shade of a tree, set up Lachlan’s new Jolly Jumper and had lunch before continuing on to the city of Mackay.

We picked our destination as the Seawinds Caravan Park on Black’s Beach where we have stayed for the last two evenings.  Apparently all the southerners, those from NSW and Victoria choose winter time to head north. We were assigned the last spot in the park - next to a very chatty lady named Chris.  The trailers are closer together than any other park we have been in to date.  Maybe a little too close.  Lachlan’s swing, jolly jumper, our lawn chairs and table are sitting outside as we claimed our little space.

Lachlan was more than happy to get out of his car seat when we arrived.  The last 7 km caused
him great grief.  He has found his lungs and we have yet to find a way to not let his screaming cause us stress.  He woke up with a bloodshot eye today which I am pretty sure was from his screaming if that gives you any idea of the deafening his cry was.  We only travel during his morning nap time and keep our travel time down to about 2 - 3 hours at a time.  He is beginning to hate his car seat and the second we place him in it he lets us know about it. It is going to be an extremely long 3 months of travel if he keeps this up.

The sugarcane fields are in full bloom around this area, which made for a pretty drive to Hatton Finch for a 2km hike today.  Poor Shaun had an extra 17 lbs to lug (yep our 17 week old is already 17 lbs!) on the path, rock hopping over a stream and up 393 stairs to get to the top.  The hike took us just over 2 hours round trip.  It was long enough that we felt we deserved an award winning meat pie (and XXXX Lager for Shaun) at the Pinnacle Family Hotel on our way back to Mackay

The travel book mentioned how good these pies were and I have to say my pie loving brother would have approved! For a country notorious for their pies both Shaun & I rated this pie
as the best we have had, just edging out Harry’s Café de Wheels in Sydney.  With the sun shining, the live music playing and full tummies we put this as one of our most favorite days.  Ask me in the morning as I try to walk if it was still one of my favorites ….

Tomorrow morning we are off to Airlie Beach to enjoy a week at the Whitsunday Islands.  We are looking forward to it.
