On the last day of 2008 we had a beautiful drive from San Diego through Yuma and then on to Phoenix. Well, it wasn't that beautiful I guess. We pretty much just saw a lot of these crazy mountains composed completely of boulders (next to zero vegetation), then we moved on to cacti and other desert landscapes. It was actually surprisingly hilly, which meant that nearly everybody passed us on the uphill sections, but good old Gloria made up for it on the downhill. Most of the people that were passing us were other RV'ers, the majority of them towing dirt bikes, quads or other funky atv's and we soon became jealous of there towing capacity when the landscape turned into huge sand dunes crawling with American motor sports enthusiasts. About the same time we caught our first sight of the Mexican/US border, a view that faded into the distance as we continued on to Phoenix, Arizona.

The roads around Phoenix are crazy! In some places the freeway was seriously 7 lanes each way! Americans like to do it big, so we decided that when in Rome...and that's when we headed straight to the first SUPER WALMART that our GPS unit could find. We had heard of such places before, but I don't think any of us had ever been. I had also heard rumors of two dollar bottles of wine and was quite pleased to find out that they were true (we still haven't tried it, but we will let you know when we do). And yes for all of you who were wondering, Super Wal Marts do sell guns, but not spear guns unfortunately.

We arrived at Carola and Christians house at about 6 thrilled to have something to eat and a shower. It had been nearly five days since soap had cleansed our dirty bodies. Had it not been for the high velocity water of the Flowrider we would have been disgusting (we might have been anyways, you will have to ask Carola). After getting cleaned up we enjoyed some good food, great conversation with some awesome people, fantastic drinks, an interesting poker game and even a little bit of dancing. All in all a great way to finish off the year.

For the first day of 2009 we did laundry, put our traction pads on our boards in preparation for the upcoming surf, and even replaced Glorias valve cover gaskets in an attempt to slow the oil leak (we had used six litres or more since leaving Canada). Well, I can't say that we replaced the gaskets since all we did was buy the parts and beer. So, our thanks go out to Jonathan and Chase. (She is still leaking, but we're pretty sure it is less than before) After completing that small repair we were even able to squeeze in an alligator feast along with some other fine meats and fondues with our good friends in Phoenix.

We left Phoenix on the 2nd of January, but not before stuffing ourselves with some tasty arepas. So good! Thank you so much Christian and Carola for the wonderful hospitality! We hope to be able to return the favor one day.
