Crappy weather, rough sea, but what a great location our accommodation was in, and boy did we love the hammocks.  After about four days of wind and rain, we decided we'd give it a couple more days to come right before we gave up and headed back to Saigon.  Just as well, as it suddenly became the beach paradise we'd been looking for all our lives (check out the before and after photos)!

It was so unrelentingly divine that we decided to head back to Saigon to buy more books, get haircuts and head straight back.  It's so cheap that we're actually making money.  Trust us, we did the sums.  Accommodation is $8 a night, food around $20 a day and our daily massage is setting us back around $4 each.

We hired scooters and checked out the island further afield.  The roads are crazy (mostly dirt roads with potholes and rocks - I've gone from non-driver to off-road biker in a week!) and the roadworks detour we came across one day will forever be my benchmark for detours from hell.   Thankfully Grant got photos, otherwise it would have been hard to describe and impossible to believe.  The coastal road is fantastic, long, straight, minimal potholes and a fantastic view for miles.  Looking at the red dusty road, Grant asked if I felt like Easy Rider.  With the holes, rocks and given the bike's suspension, I reckoned it was more like Creaky Rider.  My ass hurt for days.

Menu vileness seen in the Vietnam Airlines inflight magazine on the flight back to Saigon: Cow Spunk Hotpot.  Apparently a mushroom, before you all ask.  *shudder*

G - Catherine has neglected to fully describe her new found enthusiasm for biking. While initially somewhat wary, after 30 minutes she had a stupid grin plastered on her face, after an hour she was talking long term rental, after 2 hours she wasn't giving it back, and by the end of the day she wanted to bring it inside the bungalow so she could sleep with her hand resting on the seat and dream of traversing the Russian steppes with Ewan McGregor.
