There are many things to do as a day out in Malaga. This time we decided to visit the Castillo de Gibralfaro and enjoy the views as a start to the day. As a friend Leigh had come to visit, we also wanted to do a whistlestop tour of the best of Malaga. Our plan was to start with the Castillo, a walk along the renovated harbour, a look at the Cathedral, a walk along some of the historical small lanes, then on to the Central market, and lunch at a seafood tapas bar. Quite a lot for one day, and this ended up being about a 4.5mile walk.

The Castillo is well signposted. Driving right to the top, there is also a free car park, with plenty of spaces, and so much easier than parking in town. If you want to visit here and the Alcazabra,it is possible to buy a joint ticket and walk down to the Alcazabra. A joint ticket is just over 3euros, although we decided to visit only the Castillo for just over 2 euros each.

The castle built in the 10th century, really is a great place to view the surrounding sea, mountain range and the town with most of the key buildings easy to spot. All that remains here are really the ramparts around which you can walk and a visitors centre, which holds a few replica weapons and some model soldiers, journals and medical paraphernalia telling the history (all in Spanish).

A particularly good view of the historic bullring can be had from here, which is really quite spectacular. You cannot miss the huge Cathedral in the old town nor the large department store, the pedestrianized harbour walkway. Look more closely and you can see each of the buildings that are on the tourist map, all the churches even and make out the small lanes that make up the interesting old town. It is a great way to get your bearing for a walk around town.
