Beautiful Russian Orthodox cathedral. Third largest domed cathedral in the world. The exterior is striking because of the multi-colored marble used in the construction. Miraculously, the building was not seriously damaged during city siege in WWII.
Hitler's German army laid siege of the city, then known as Leningrad for 900 days. They came close to the city but could never take it. Many Russian soldiers and citizens were killed or starved to death. It was an incredible testament of the tenacity, pride and will of the Russian people.
St Isaac's Cathedral was slightly damaged during the siege and the marks have been left in the building's exterior to remind the people of the sacrifice of others at a terrible time of war.
